Yoga Demystified

"Yoga" is derived from the ancient Sanskrit word "Yug", meaning to yoke, unify or join.

In simplest terms, yoga is the unification of mind, body and spirit.

At NTouch, we recognize the impact this philosophy has on overall health and well being.

We teach yoga classes to fit the needs of all levels of Yogis.

Our primary practice is based on the principles of Hatha yoga ( "Ha," symbolizing the sun and

"Tha" symbolizing the moon.) Hatha Yoga combines specific postures aimed at stretching and

strengthening the body's core with emphasis on the practice of controlled breathing or

"Pranayama" The breathbeing the most important tool in yoga practice.

Classes are designed to meet your individualized needs, whether you are experienced in yoga

or it is a new practice for you. It is important that you feel comfortable, relaxed and rejuvenated

during and after each class. All we ask is come with an open mind and be patient and kind with

yourself.

 Yoga Etiquette

Compassion

If your compassion does not include yourself, it is incomplete.- Jack Kornfield

The beauty of yoga is that "The You" that you show up with each time on the mat is perfectly fine. You don't need to be flexible, thin, perky, enlightened or solem to practice yoga. We are all glorious works in progress. It is called yoga practice, not yoga  achievement. Showing up, as is, is a commitment to be celebrated. A blissful yoga practice in non-competitive and non-judgemental: particularly to ones' own self.

Being Present

Yoga is the practice of quieting the mind. -Patanjali

Yoga class is the perfect time to quiet a chattering mind and make the shift from human DOING to human Being. Take a  deep breath, soften your gaze and allow yourself to let go. This includes turning off your cell phone and immersing yourself fully into the moment.

Be Kind To Your Body

I think the health of your mind depends on your being able to love your body. -Rodney Yee

If you have any special needs, we encourage you to communicate that with the instructor prioir to class. If you require modifications to the pose during class, by all means listen to your body. A yoga pose should feel sustainable and challenge your edges a little, not cause strain or pain. Honor your body's wisdom to back off or discontinue a pose if it feels strenuois and save it for another day.

Equipment

The most important pieces of equipment you need for doing yoga are your body and your mind.-Rodney Yee

NTouch provides mats, blocks, straps, bolsters, and other props for your convienance. However feel free to bring your own yoga gear if your prefer. Clothing should be stretchy, comfortable and allow you to move and flow with ease.

Food & Water

Life expectancy would grow by leaps and bounds if green vegetables smelled as good as bacon.  ~Doug Larson

Jokes aside, yoga is best performed on an empty stomach or a few hours after a meal since you will be moving, twisting and bending. If you are feeling hungry, juice or a small snack prior to class work well. It is important to keep hydrated, so drinking water during class is encouraged.

It's OK if you're late.

Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape.- Unknown

We know you do your best to get to class on time, but sometimes life has other plans. If you enter after class has begun, please quitely situate yourself, be present and be grateful, because we are very grateful for you.

The beauty is that people come her for a stretch, and leave with a lot more. -Liza Ciano
